Messias grew up in Fall River, MA to a large Portuguese family, including three sisters. He had a hard time coming out to my traditional Portuguese catholic family and accepting himself so he is hoping to help the LGBT community with a continuation of his Site Suitability map showing which areas in the U.S are most suitable for the LGBT population. Messias currently plays in a LGBT softball league in Providence, RI called the Providence Cruisers. He also works for his parent’s business, where he owns three convenience stores called Red's and is starting a beverage company. Messias hopes that his project will reach the country nationwide and help those in LGBT community find a safe haven or better place to live, while showing how certain parts of the country are not suitable for the LGBT community.
Messias will be working on a Site Suitability Map for the LGBT population showing which areas are most suitable and which areas need help. He will base the suitability map from state laws and policies, LGBT friendly churches, GSA clubs, schools, community centers, health centers, workplaces, trained doctors and therapists, etc. He will also have a survey about suicidal thoughts and attempts and show on a map where most of them occur and see if there is any correlation between the map and survey.
