Melissa Barnhill

Working closely in the LGBT community, Melissa maintains a strong passion to understand what work must be done in order to eliminate health disparities for marginalized communities. Her goal centers around the approach of implementing LGBT health topics such as teaching students and professionals how to identify patient centered care in specific medical school curriculums.  Ultimately, making health information easier to access will improve the quality of life for individuals identifying in a sexual and/or gender minority group. Melissa strongly believes that people, no matter how they identify, have a right to access knowledge and improve their own lives-- and the accessibility to understand one's own health and safety will allow for finding solutions to this very relevant social justice issue. Melissa looks forward to work closely and intently in the process of addressing the inequities of care in the public health sector.

For her capstone, Melissa will design, implement, and educate healthcare providers and professionals at Adagio Health offices and clinics in Pennsylvania. Melissa hopes that this training will help providers understand the specific health needs and challenges the LGBT community might experience while accessing health care. She will emphasize that patient-centered, comprehensive, inclusive care is the only way to improve health outcomes of sexual and gender minorities.
