The LGBT Health Graduate Certificate Program at The George Washington University hosted a special event on the evening of July 17, coinciding with the summer residency of the first class of the LGBT Health graduate certificate program at GW: the first LGBT Health Forum is held annually at The George Washington University. Last years event is entitled The DOMA Decision and the Affordable Care Act: The Impact on LGBT Health.
How will the Supreme Court’s ruling on United States v. Windsor impact LGBT Health? How do the federal government and states move forward to implement the Affordable Care Act now that DOMA has been invalidated? Keynote talks from major figures in the evolution of health care, constitutional law, and LGBT health in the United States will deconstruct the ruling and talk about the future. Keynotes talks will be followed by a panel discussion from additional experts in LGBT health and audience Q&A.

T.R. Reid, best-selling author of The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care, and host of the documentary Sick Around the World on the PBS series “Frontline”, and former London and Tokyo bureau chief for The Washington Post.
Walter Dellinger, acting Solicitor General for the 1996-97 Term of the US Supreme Court under President Clinton, the Douglas B. Maggs Professor of Law at Duke University, Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard University, and key member of the legal team that argued the government’s case for the Affordable Care Act before the Supreme Court in June 2012. He submitted amicus briefs in the 2013 Defense of Marriage case and has written extensively on many issues of constitutional law, including marriage equality, in the Harvard Law Review, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, the New Republic, and the London Times. In 2013 he was named one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in the U.S. by the National Law Journal.
Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson, Professor of Psychology and Director of the interdisciplinary Women, Gender & Sexuality program at the University of Virginia, expert on parenting in gay families and lesbian and bisexual women’s health. Dr. Patterson served as a member of the United States Institute of Medicine Committee on LGBT Health Issues and was the key plaintiff’s witness in the 1996 Hawaii Supreme Court gay marriage case of Baehr v. Miike. Her latest book, co-edited with Anthony R. D’Augelli, Handbook of Psychology and Sexual Orientation (Oxford University Press) was published in 2013.
