Megan Walden

Megan was raised in Lexington, KY where she is employed by University of Kentucky (UK) Healthcare as a Central Monitoring Nurse Coordinator. She has worked as an RN since 2009 and has spent the last 5 years in remote telemetry monitoring. In 2013, after doing research and attending a training on LGBTQ* healthcare at UK, Megan started the UK Healthcare LGBTQ* Inclusive Workgroup with the purpose of achieving Leader Status with the Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index. While we did not achieve Leader Status the first year (2014), we worked hard and have achieved it since 2015. After that, this committee grew into something bigger and has been working on updating and changing wording in policies, creating inclusive restrooms on campus, and sponsoring local LGBTQ* events. Our committee has received a Quality Innovation Award and an Inclusive Excellence Award for our work with the LGBTQ* population at UK Healthcare. From this committee Megan was asked to sit on the Board for Transform Health, an LGBTQ* Clinic that opened in July of 2016. Megan was then asked to be the Health Educator for Transform Health and has held that position since the clinic opened. What started as attending a training has led to a passion for the LGBTQ* population. Megan’s goal is to create an environment of high quality healthcare both at Transform Health and UK Healthcare.

Megan plans to create a curriculum for nursing students in an Associate or Bachelors program that focuses on LGBTQ* specific healthcare and present it to local public colleges.
