Maria Zea

Dr. Maria Cecilia Zea received her Ph.D. in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1990. She is a Professor at the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department and the Director of the Latino Health Research Center (LHRC) at the George Washington University.  Dr. Zea is Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical & Consulting Psychology and of the Journal of LGBT Health Research.  She was Associate Editor of Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology for 8 years.  Dr. Zea has served on the Minority Fellowship Committee, the Committee for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns, and the Board of Professional Affairs of the American Psychological Association (APA).  She is also an APA Fellow (Divisions 44 and 45).  Dr. Zea was a member of NIH's Behavioral and Social Consequences of HIV/AIDS Study Section and has served as ad-hoc reviewer in NIH Study Sections and California HIV/AIDS Research Program.  Her research interests are behavioral aspects of HIV/AIDS among Latinos.  She was the Principal Investigator of an NIMH-funded project on disclosure of HIV status among Latino gay men, and of an NICHD-funded project on contextual factors of sexual risk among Latino men who have sex with men.  She is the P.I. of an NICHD-funded R01 to study HIV prevalence, sexual risk, and attitudes towards circumcision among Colombian MSM (with Paul Poppen, Carol A. Reisen, and Fernanda Bianchi) and a co-investigator in an NICHD-funded project on HIV risk among Latino day laborers:  structural, social, and individual factors (F. Bianchi, P.I.).  Dr. Zea is also a member of the GWU HIV/AIDS Institute.
