Matt Halverson

Matt Halverson is a Study Coordinator for the University of Utah Department of Neurology, as well as a Recovery Assistant for Volunteers of America’s Adult Detoxification Center. Matt is passionate about research and improving the clinical experience of patients. Matt is looking to pursue a career in medicine and is seeking to improve his ability to provide beneficial and culturally competent care for patients who come from diverse and intersecting backgrounds. Additionally, he is looking learn ways to empower patients who identify themselves with the LGBT community. Matt also hopes to take what he learns from this program and use it to improve clinical research so that a wider range of people may be represented in clinical trials.

Mirroring a model for the Volunteers of America’s medical outreach team, Matt is working to start a medical service van. The van would consist of an interdisciplinary team of providers ideally being: a nurse practitioner or physician, a nurse or medical assistant, a counselor, a caseworker, and social worker. This team would travel around the Salt Lake County area to lower income neighborhoods and areas where transient people seek shelter. The van would be geared to towards seeking out LGBT identified individuals who are either homeless or live without the means to access to sufficient and competent healthcare.
