Katherine Smith

Katherine was raised in the beautiful rocky mountain west but gained her street-smarts in Baltimore and the outskirts of D.C. Katherine is a pharmacotherapy board-certified clinical pharmacist and associate professor of pharmacy practice. She believes that pharmacists, amongst the most accessible health care providers, have a responsibility to provide culturally competent care to the LGBTQ population. She is actively involved in national clinical pharmacy and pharmacy academia organizations and hopes to bring LGBTQ healthcare to mainstream pharmacy education. Her clinical interests include pediatrics, preventative health, and the medical needs of underserved populations. What started as a limited practice in a free clinic has developed into a post-graduate pharmacy residency and a desire to support partnerships between traditional healthcare and community health organizations to improve access to care. She’s published on gender-affirming hormone therapy but hopes to learn how to conduct practice-based research with the LGBTQ population.

Katherine plans to leverage collaboration between pharmacists and community health organizations as a way to increase access to preventative care. She also hopes to develop an inter-professional curriculum in LGBTQ cultural competency and to address national pharmacy organization policies affecting the LGBTQ population.
