Residencies

Hybrid residencies are an important component of the LGBT Health Policy and Practice Program as they allow students to have an interactive and personal experience with one another outside of the virtual classroom. Residencies expose students to a host of multidisciplinary faculty from GW and other top-level institutions, along with prominent guest faculty from the health care and policy fields.

Over the course of several days, students engage in panel discussions, workshops, outings and networking opportunities with leaders in relevant fields. Students can also take advantage of the benefits of convening in the nation’s capital, often to meet with politicians, policy makers and leaders in the health care industry during the Summer Residency.

Summer Residency (On-Campus)

Held annually in mid-July, the summer residency is the on-campus meeting of the program year. Students meet faculty and fellow students, complete part of the core course content, attend lectures by distinguished guests and talk with faculty facilitators to make initial explorations of capstone projects.

Spring Residency (Virtual)

Held in January, the spring residency is the second of two required program residencies. It is held from Friday through Monday of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Students complete a portion of their elective course content and present updates from their capstone project.

2024 dates: Friday, Jan. 15–Monday, Jan. 18

Planning Your Summer Residency

Housing and Cost

Current housing cost is $275. For visiting students, multiple occupancy housing is provided on or near campus at reduced cost.

There is limited availability of single occupancy units on campus for the summer residency. If single occupancy is desired, we recommend finding housing independently. Contact our office for a list of local hotels and referral services.

Upon request, students may stay additional nights, checking in a day earlier or out a day later, for an additional fee.

Summer: Check-in for the summer begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday before the start of the program on Sunday. Checkout is the following Saturday morning.

Spring: Check-in and checkout for the spring residency are Thursday and Monday, respectively. Students will be hosted in multiple occupancy rooms at Arc the.Hotel.

Meals

We estimate the cost of meals for the week at $250–$300, although it is certainly possible to spend more. The program will provide a list of local restaurants with a range of costs and variety of cuisines. Program presentations and meetings are held on Foggy Bottom Campus, near many affordable breakfast, lunch and dinner spots.

Grocery stores Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are also nearby. Lunch on Capitol Hill day will be in the Longworth Congressional cafeteria, which also offers a range of options.

For Alumni

The online format presents an opportunity to invite alumni and community partners and stakeholders to participate. If you are one of our alumni or if you are a representative of an LGBTQI+ organization, please contact [email protected] for information about joining us.

Stephen Forssell

"With D.C. being the center of federal health policy, we want students to have the experience of changing policy. We go to Capitol Hill, we meet with members of Congress, we give them policy input and ask for commitments."

Stephen Forssell, Program Director
